Bible Art Journaling Challenge Week 1 – Be Brave
Hello Everyone!
Let me be the first to welcome you to our very first week of the Original Bible Art Journaling Challenge set to run weekly throughout 2015! This is going to be a fantastic year together growing in our relationships with God and each other, as well as our own creative skill!
You can find answers to most any question you may have about the challenge over on my Challenge page.
Without any delay, enjoy my video below and then head over to our Facebook group (everyone welcome), to chat about this weeks Bible Art Journaling Challenge and get started on your own page!
If you wanted to see this week’s scripture again, here it is for you.
Joshua 1:9 says, ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.’
What a great scripture! How does it speak to you?
Apologies for the occasional bursts of blurry focus on the video which was less obvious when recording in real time. I’ll be rectifying it in future weeks. I think it’s still a great video and I hope you enjoyed it!

I just discovered your blog today and am enjoying reading your posts and watching videos. I have never done any Bible art before but am wanting to this year. I’m not an artist by gifting….just interested in spending time with the Lord this way for a season. This video has given me a boost for a starting point. Thanks so much for sharing your process.

I am waiting for an out-of-print NRSV (long story) and can hardly wait to get into journaling in it. God has used this wonderful site and Rebekah’s insights to open me up a bit. I am SO grateful for this weekly challenge and anticipate learning a lot artistically and spiritually, once I am able to put medium to the page. Thanks so much Rebekah for sharing your walk with God in this way.

I just came across your website and I love what I see. I’m thinking of starting slowly since I’m not an artist. Your videos are a very well done and so helpful. One question, after all the artwork is done can you still read the text in your Bible?

Welcome Gen! I’m sure you will find plenty of things you can enjoy doing with whatever skills you have and will enjoy the process. 🙂 Most every piece I have done, I can see everything under it. I have decided my Bible is dedicated to this and am using it as a devotional journal so am not being too picky about it. However, I know it may concern some so I always tend to share techniques which will allow the text to show through. Hope that answers your question!

Rebekah,
I had never heard of Bible Art Journaling before. This challenge has been answered prayer for me in studying the word of God and was fun. I did prepare my page with liquitex matte gel medium so that it would not bleed through to the other side. Also, I did not have the liquid acrylic, so I used a white Sharpie poster paint marker instead and it worked just fine. Love your artwork and scripture studies. Keep it up, you are impacting lives with your ministry, so thanks.

Hi, Rebekah! I found your videos on Youtube when i was looking for journaling ideas. I was surprised that there’s a bible journaling. I haven’t heard a bible journal before i’ve seen your videos. I immediately watched your videos and really into it. 🙂
Recently I had major traumatic changes in my life and i’m struggling with depression and anxiety almost all my life, being in a country that doesn’t have free health care nor proper psychiatrist, i look into journaling to help with my struggles. It has lead me closer to God as i listen lots to Christian songs to give me strength. Now i’m planning to get back to read the bible again and discover my relationship with God once more.
My country doesn’t have note taking or bible journal, i looked online but the local site couldn’t order it because they all out of stock from the origin country. So, i’m wondering if the quality paper of bible journal is different with regular bible? And if i use regular bible would it withstand watercolor paints or colour pencils?
Your videos and blog has help me a lot. I’m looking forward to joining this bible challenge. Thank you and may God always bless your life. 🙂

Hi Rebekah,
I’m returning to bible study after over a decade of hiatus, and am so interested in art bible journaling. I wonder if these distress inks and gel pens work over the clear gesso that you recommend later in the series. Thank you so much for sharing your talent, techniques and love for the bible <3
Best,

Hello Rebekah,
Your video has inspired me in many different ways. 30 years ago I was unwed and pregnant. I was at a crossroad as to what I should do with my situation. In my desperation I sought out what I should do by looking at a Bible which I have never done before. I said a prayer to God..if I am to keep this baby, show me a sign. I opened the bible to this exact verse Joshua 1:9. 8 months later I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy whom I named Joshua! Today my Joshua is an amazing man, son and a pastor to a church. God is faithful and is with me where ever I go.

I am about to start my first challenge. I didn’t see in the you tube that you gesso’d the page first. Is this a given on all the projects? Thanks so much!

Hello Sally! On this page, I did not use gesso. You’ll always see me mention if I did or did not use any. And, if you look at “Supplies” in my top navigation of the blog, you’ll see all my latest recommendations on gesso for the best results, regardless what I share over the weeks in the Bible Art Journaling Challenge. Have fun creating! 🙂

Hi Rebekah,
I’m new to journaling and just tried this for my first challenge. Thank you so much for your tutorials they are amazing!!!!
One question – do you seal your page afterward so it doesn’t bleed to the facing page? If so what do you suggest? I tried gesso but it smears the colors.
Thank you again – wonderful job and God bless ?

Hi Rebekah!
Thanks so much for your inspiring talent and blog page! I am very new to bible journalling in this way but felt prompted to start doing something like this. While searching the internet for ideas on how to go about this, I came across one of your challenges on Pinterest!!! I am now leading a group of ladies to create like this on the NGO hospital ship in Africa, where we serve as volunteers. We love studying the Word of God like this!
Thanks again!

I’ve just come across your journaling videos and find them a wonderful addition to my quiet time with the Lord. Your artistry is lovely and beautifully sets the stage as you share all that you’re learning about the selected scripture passage. Several years ago the Lord deeply blessed my heart with Joshua 1:9. I was going through a very stressful time; I was overwhelmed and fearful and the Lord used this verse to fill me with such courage, completely altering my outlook. This verse remains so special to me and I constantly praise the Lord for leading me to understand that we are to be courageous in adversity because He constantly walks with us and is our defender. What a Friend we have in Jesus!!

This is so beautiful ! I got my journaling Bible just this week, and this is the second page I have done. I loved thinking about the verse as I did the artwork. The reason we can be brave is that God is with us everywhere we go! The ethereal coloring reminding me of outer space is such a great illustration of the power of God to go with this verse!

Just received my first Bible Art Journaling Challenge week 1. I am very excited. I received my Journaling ESV Bible for my birthday back in Nov. 2016 and I couldn’t wait to start, so I just dove in…without any instruction or direction. It was so freeing to write and color and draw (am not an artist) in God’s Word. This is such a precious new discipline for me. I have since explored Pinterest and found your blog recently. I have already created 150 pages of creative images, text, notes, and drawings. Now I am so encouraged to find your new resources to enlarge my creative juices. Thank you for your commitment to help and equip others to explore the depths of God’s Word…and BE BRAVE. Love

I stumbled across your blog not realizing you are featured in the Bible Journaling book I purchased recently. I’m waiting on Gesso (should be here today) to really dive in and Be Brave. I’ve added a wonderful post card that my kids sent when I was baptised last year as a tip in with some recently acquired washi tape, but have yet to put anything other than colored pencil on a page. Beyond EXCITED to delve into God’s word with a new found joy and enthusiasm. THANK YOU for what you do, it is truly God’s calling. I just love to watch your videos and listen to you read the scriptures as you work. It has opened my eyes to what an immersive experience the Bible can be.

Hi loved the lesson, I haven’t got those inks so I used pen and pencil crayon. I did my own thing inspired by the passage and your lesson. I noticed the group is closed as I am joining so late so I shared on pinterest.

Hi Dianne, Glad you enjoyed the lesson! The group is closed only because most members appreciate the private space. It is growing regularly and everyone will be happy to have you join in at any time you are interested. xx

just found and started your challenges, love the lesson about being brave! I needed that today. Love that it’s self paced (because we all know life sometimes gets in the way) and that it isn’t “hard” or take so much skill I can’t do it. 🙂

What else could be used to keep letters on page? I bought mounting putty thinking it would work but it leaves small oily spots.
