Deeper Still lesson 1

Yay! Let’s get started!

Deeper Still

Scripture

I used my Double Column ESV Journaling Bible, for this lesson and the scripture for this challenge is Psalm 51. In Heaven Is Calling Lesson 9, I had focused in on the story in 2 Samuel 12, which led to this psalm being written. In that lesson I did not highlight this psalm. This is a psalm written by King David after he was confronted by the prophet Nathan, for taking Bathsheba and having her husband killed. That all sounds a bit intense and potentially hard to relate to, but follow me here. Let’s look at David’s response to being confronted for the sin in his life.

I’ll highlight the following verses in Psalm chapter 51 for you: 1-3, 6,10-13 and 16-17…

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

1For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

God’s merciful forgiveness that cleans us

We can learn something about God, through all that David had learned of Him over the course of their relationship. As I prepared for this Deeper Still series to start, I felt drawn to the story again, in a new area of the Bible. How fitting as we adventure  “deeper still” into the depths of God.

When I created the sketch for this lesson, I found myself speaking to what has already happened. David cried out to God for mercy in repentance for his sin. He asked God to create a clean heart in him. What he got was God’s merciful forgiveness. What he got was a clean heart. When we’ve come to God and repented, this is what happens to us! We get a clean heart. Instead of a traceable sketch that just repeated what David said, “Create in me a clean heart, O God”, I made a declaration of what God does when we ask this of Him. “You create a clean heart in me, Oh God!”

There is something powerful about being reminded of what God has done in our life, instead of dwelling in sin that we already repented of. May we repent from whatever sin holds us back from the great merciful forgiveness of God and then go out and live in the clean heart He gives us!

Responding

When we look at what verse 16 says about a broken spirit and contrite heart, it actually means just that. God desires more that we feel true brokenness for the sins we confess to Him, than for any other sacrifice we can offer Him. And when we do this, what we get in return is a clean heart. We get to move on from that moment and be God’s kid.

Many who participate in my challenge, already have relationship with Jesus. And if you do, wonderful! It was the best decision I ever made. Not everyone has made that choice though. If you have not experienced what it is like to invite Jesus to be in relationship with you and have His free gift, I want to invite you to do so right now. Or perhaps you’ve walked away from God and want to have a meaningful relationship with Him. He loves you so much.

I have this question for you. What would stop you from saying yes to Jesus? Is there really anything worthwhile to lose, in giving Him a chance? Would you let me lead you into the beginning of a life filled with God’s grace and joy?

It is simple. You can just repeat this prayer to God, after me and believe it in your heart. There is no magic in the words, it is about starting a relationship with your Creator who loves you more than you can ever comprehend.

God, I acknowledge that you are real and sent your Son Jesus to die on the cross for me. I admit that I have not always done the right things and have made mistakes. Despite trying to be a good person, I have sinned. So, I need your help. Will you come and wash me clean? Will you come be the Lord of my life and my best friend? I accept you into my heart and welcome you to show me how to live my life in the most beautiful way possible. I give you my life and heart ask you to make it clean. I want to trade my best efforts at this life, for your amazing destiny for my life.

If you just repeated that after me, let me be the first to welcome you into God’s family! The Bible says that when you do what you just did, that all the angels of heaven rejoice. That means heaven is having a party right now to celebrate your decision! What a great start to joining God’s family!

Please let me know in the comments below if you have made a decision to invite Jesus into your life today, or to renew your relationship with Him. I would love to celebrate with you! I want to also encourage you to please find some local Christians and let them know about your new decision, so they can be a friend to you in this new season of your wonderful life.

And on that note, lets enjoy some creative fun in the Word!

How to trace with colored pencil

I feel like I covered this topic in my video, of how to trace with colored pencil. I often find people want to trace, without have those ugly eraser marks left behind. It seems simple, but you really can just use the colored pencil (or other coloring tool) to just start tracing directly with it. Just go in with your lightest colors first and get bolder as you get further into your creative time. And as mentioned in my video, it is easiest to trace with colored pencil when you start with an image that has bold, dark lines to trace over. That’s it! This is simple stuff and you can totally do this!

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below! If you’re new here, we have lots of helpful people in our community who pop into the comments and share ideas and thoughts you may want to check out.
